Resume Writing Rules
There are a number of resume writing rules that will ensure your resume is not cast aside at the first inspection. When an employer advertises a job vacency, they may receive a very large number of job applications from prospective employees. These job applications, often in the form of resumes, will be reduced as quickly as possible to minimise the amount of work needed in selecting the perfect employee. The following rules wull ensure you minimise the risk of having your resume rejected at the first stage.
1 - A resume cannot contain mistakes
Use all means available to ensure your resume writing skills are used to their best advantage. When you have created your resume, proof-read it yourself to ensure there are no mistakes. Employers often use lower level staff to check for basic spelling mistakes or errors in grammar to weed out the first batch of rejections. There is no point in going through the process of resume writing, only to throw away a job opportunity through basic spelling mistakes.
When you have proof-read your resume yourself, have a trusted, competent friend read it. They will often spot errors you have missed due to over-familiarity with it. Use a spell checker, but don't rely on it. They often miss errors in unusual nouns and esoteric engineering, medical or management terms.
2 - A resume must be well designed and structured
If your resume is not well structured or easy to read, an employer may miss important details, or lose the will to live as they wade through large blocks of text. A professional resume format will ensure your resume is easy to read and presents the core information in a consistent, well-structured format. Use headings and sub-headings to set out your career details and qualifications clearly.
3 - A resume must be comprehensive
While it is designed to be an easily digestible summary of your working life and achievements, be careful not to leave out important details that could affect the outcome of your job application. Experiences early in your career may be seen to be important in your development as an employee, and if you forget to add in valuable experiences, you will be selling yourself short. Good resume writing ensures your whole career and experience is accounted for.
4 - Resume writing must be persuasive
Sell yourself! - in the most subtle way. An employer will not know anything about you that you don't include in your resume. You must include any skills, qualifications and achievements that will show you are the most suitable person for the job.
5 - Tailor your resume for the job in question
Strongly emphasise your qualities that will be of benefit to the employer. Resume writing gives you the opportunity to ensure your career and achievements are presented to the employer in your terms and in the way that best shows your suitability for the job.
